Top court poised to rule on impeachment in March
By Kim Hyo-jin

The Constitutional Court ordered National Assembly representatives prosecuting the motion to impeach President Park Geun-hye, and Park¡¯s lawyers, to submit their final arguments no later than Feb. 23, Thursday.

This indicates that the court will try to rule on the impeachment case in March before acting court President Lee Jung-mi retires. March 13 is her last day as a justice.
The court earlier announced its hearings on the case will end Feb. 22.

Lee said she will not re-summon witnesses who don¡¯t show up at the court as scheduled. ¡°If they are absent for unconvincing reasons, we won¡¯t call them in again,¡± she said.

Her remarks came amid accusations that President Park¡¯s attorneys are using tactics to delay a final ruling by the court.
The trial has been underway at the Constitutional Court to determine whether to uphold the impeachment motion against the President for her involvement in a corruption scandal centered on her friend Choi Soon-sil.

There has been a speculation that a ruling could be made before March 13 when Lee¡¯s tenure ends, which would leave the court with just seven justices. Park¡¯s lawyers have requested multiple witnesses, in what critics say is a delaying tactic, during the course of hearings.

The acting court president said she will cancel questioning of Choi, former presidential chief of staff Kim Ki-choon and ex-senior presidential secretary An Chong-bum if they do not appear on the days they were summoned for.

However, there is still a possibility that the trial can be delayed if President Park decides to appear before the court. Her lawyers left such a possibility open, saying, ¡°We will discuss whether the President should appear.¡±

The country has to elect a new president within 60 days if the court upholds the parliamentary impeachment of Park
